Jamaica counts 14 parishes; Brixton has long answered to the title of the 15th. This is where the Windrush generation found work, built churches, opened shops, raised sound systems and helped make SW9 a capital of Caribbean Britain.

Today, Brixton Village and Market Row mark the day with two celebrations. From 1pm, Ms Esme’s Organic Roots hosts an afternoon of fresh juices, celebration cake, elders’ stories and lovers rock, dub and dancehall. Later, Etta’s Seafood takes over the evening with Levi Roots, Brixton Downbeat, Tiny T and Pure Vinyl on the decks, with some jerk chicken, jerk fish and more.

Start with a rum punch at Stafford’s rum bar inside Healthy Eaters, pass through Ms Esme’s in the afternoon, then finish the evening dark at Etta’s Seafood with an all star lineup.

Brixton’s Supercute mama won.

On the way, it knocked out brewing heavyweights Vocation and Siren, in a field that also included Pretty Decent, Five Points, Mondo and Drop Project.

“We are absolutely gobsmacked,” said Supercute’s James. “We’re not saying mama has stolen the title of number one beer in the UK, but in our local area of South London, the drinkers have decided.”

Over the last few weeks, our community has attempted something extraordinary: buying back Brixton Village.

People keep asking me the same question:

Why is Brixton Village so valuable?

The answer isn’t the buildings.

It’s the culture.

That might sound sentimental.

It isn’t.

Investors value Brixton by looking at footfall, rents and property prices. But those are all consequences. They measure the value culture creates—they don't explain where that value comes from.

Culture is the reason people travel across London, and across the world, to spend a Saturday in Brixton.

It’s why restaurants can charge more here than elsewhere. It’s why businesses want Brixton in their name. It’s why property around the market commands a premium.

Culture isn't decoration. It's productive.

Culture creates value

Walk through Brixton Village on any Saturday and you'll see the real asset.

Fishmongers and butchers on one side of the arcade. Restaurants on the other transforming those same ingredients into food that rivals some of London’s best kitchens.

Portuguese cafés that have outlived countless trends.

Caribbean, African, Latin American and South Asian communities layered together over generations.

More than one hundred languages spoken within a single market.

You can build another shopping arcade.

You cannot build that.

You cannot franchise it.

You cannot recreate it by simply spending more money somewhere else.

Places like Brixton aren't designed. They emerge over generations.

Decades of migration, entrepreneurship, music, food, struggle and celebration create something no developer can manufacture.

That’s what people come for.

I think we should take the phrase “cultural capital” more literally.

Culture doesn't create value directly. It creates a chain reaction.

That's why Brixton is worth more than a similar collection of buildings one stop up the Victoria line.

The premium isn’t in the bricks.

It’s in everything the community has built around them.

Property doesn’t create cultural value. Culture creates property value.

Every culture begins as something intrinsic. Music. Food. Language. Traditions. Ways of living that hold value for the people who create them.

Then something changes.

Other people begin to copy them.

Visit them.

Market them.

Build businesses around them.

At that moment, culture stops being just identity. It becomes an economic asset—something that can be rented, branded, licensed and sold.

I use "cultural capital" here to mean the accumulated cultural value of a place and the economic value it generates.

This is why investors are drawn to places like Brixton. They're not buying bricks. They're buying the future income that culture makes possible.

Culture is a productive asset.

It generates economic value.

Ownership determines who captures that value.

For decades, Brixton's community created extraordinary value. Yet much of the financial return flowed to whoever owned the buildings. Buying back Brixton Village is our attempt to realign those incentives. Not because ownership is symbolic, but because ownership also determines where value flows.

Culture Capital and Brixton

How has Brixton created a unique ‘culture capital’ that many businesses and investors benefit from today? Is it possible to protect its authenticity? How can we build on it? The conflict of culture - who protects, who builds and who exploits? What could we do to mitigate potential tensions arising from feelings of shared ownership of something intangible?

How is culture expressed?

Culture is a system that expresses the value of a group of people; their beliefs, their norms, their social practices, traditions and more. A group’s culture is expressed through music, dance, art, designs, names, symbolism, ceremonies, architecture, handicrafts and narratives. These practices are always authentically created and hold intrinsic value to the originators.

Extrinsic value is created when these expressions of culture transcend their originators.

In the early 2000s, kids in middle America started wearing their jeans low, a culture set by ex-prisoners wearing their jeans low because they weren’t allowed belts while incarcerated. The recent obsession with big hips and big butts on women in mainstream fashion was inspired by the culture of African dancers accentuating the size of their hips and buttocks during cultural dances. Many western teenagers are now imitating east Asian culture from their experiences with online games, anime, k-pop routines and social media memes. Once people start to imitate these norms and behaviours, the cultural value system increases in demand, and more people start replicating them. Individuals begin using these cultural symbols to represent their beliefs and social status, shifting the culture from an intrinsic to an extrinsic economic value for consumers.

These expressions turn into capital.

Business owners and brand experts recognise the value created through imitating these cultural expressions by a growing audience, and can leverage this cultural value as capital. In the same way, they can leverage financial capital to grow; they can leverage this capital to grow by driving a brand preference to market their ideas. Investors do this by promising their customers a taste or association with that culture through their products and services.

Throughout history, different cultural values have been created and leveraged as capital. We believe in champagne from the Champagne region, quality Irish whisky, Swiss watches, American-made, German efficiency, fashionable Hoxton and Cool Brixton.

Consider the British company Diageo - one of the biggest drinks companies in the world which own Malibu, which leverages the Caribbean culture, Smirnoff vodka, which is based on Russian culture, Hose Cuervo tequila and Irish Guinness.

Brixton’s Culture Capital

Brixton is now one of the most prominent destinations in the UK and has the UK’s busiest nightlife; Brixton tube station is the second busiest station in London and is recognised as one of London’s coolest places to visit by many tourists. Undoubtedly, Brixton has cemented itself as the heartbeat of London’s culture of diversity.

From the colourful, spicy foods in the market to Reggae music, Brixton became a place that belonged to the Caribbean community and other migrants whose shared experiences have laid the foundation for this new cultural identity.

The Brixton riots of the 1980s made Brixton synonymous with the struggle against overt oppression ….to the point that Brixton started being namechecked by hip-hop artists from the US.

Brixton stands for something - a new set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, norms and social practices which affect behaviours; it has to be from a place of authenticity. Perhaps that comes from being marginalised by mainstream culture to the point where you are left with what is real to you, a feeling, a vibe, and it’s true to you, so you live it proudly. Is authenticity the first ingredient of culture and creating culture capital?

More than fifty businesses now use the word Brixton as part of their products and services identity; even organisations with no authentic connection to Brixton’s cultural history borrow or “exploit” the cultural capital created by its originators to market their services.

So how did Brixton create this cultural capital that the world wants to buy, borrow, and sometimes steal?

Old Brixton Vs New Brixton

Over the past 20 years, Brixton has been through regeneration and gentrification, and seen many new brands and businesses moving into the area to build their businesses.

This migration often caused tension between new Brixtonians and “old”(original) Brixtonians. Of course, no real date separates the two groups, but generally, those who have been in Brixton for a long time consider businesses and individuals that have recently moved in as “New Brixtonians”, who are here to leverage its cultural capital and often do not contribute to it.

New Brixton is often considered white, middle class, and coming in to build businesses that serve outsiders rather than serving the existing community; they tend to offer goods and services that are marketed at a pricepoint out of reach for Old Brixtonians, whilst simultaneously reflecting their own culture back at them. There is a general belief that the new Brixton exploits the cultural capital that old Brixton has built.

Excuse the pun, but is it this black and white? Are old Brixtonians responsible for creating this capital, and is new Brixton responsible for exploiting it? Besides the challenge of determining who even belongs to new or old Brixton, there is the challenge of determining who is using the capital and whose contributions are building it.

Without careful consideration, most old Brixtonians might miss the cultural significance of a brand like Brixton Brewery, founded by two local couples who wanted to put Brixton on the map for great beer. They founded and brewed an easy-drinking beer inspired by the electric neighbourhood they call home. I had the chance to spend some time with their founder, @mrbrixton, while on a cultural trip to Harlem, when I discovered his genuine love for Brixton. We both agreed we would both live in Brixton forever if we could. We love Brixton so much; our IG handles are @Geraldbrixton and @mrbrixton. Brixton Brewery has made and sold hundreds of thousands of beers to people who would have heard of Brixton for the first time. There is no doubt that Brixton Brewery has benefited from the vibrant, colourful culture of Brixton, and there is also no doubt that its authenticity, creativity and commitment to Brixton have contributed significantly to the creation of its cultural capital.

I believe this is not black and white. Perhaps all businesses leveraging the culture capital will raise the profile of Brixton somehow since more people become aware of the place, its people and its values. The issue is the balance of exploitation and contribution.

In the early 2000s, when no one wanted to be in Brixton, you could argue restaurants, such as The Lounge and Satay bar, which opened and stayed in Brixton ever since, have added more to the capital than new businesses moving into Brixton and benefiting from what’s already been created.

Businesses, in the beginning, were more authentic to the cultural values(rarely signaling it). In contrast, companies selling products and services without a direct connection with Brixton often struggle to connect with the locals, often with lots of tension between these groups.

This got me thinking, if businesses intentionally enter into a location and piggyback off a culture that has been built around culture, creativity, adversity or even struggles, then surely it is fair to suggest that they make some form of contribution to this culture. How can they help us elevate it….could they contribute to a culture tax. A culture tax could be a monetary contribution that supports cultural growth or direct support for community and youth groups. The money could go towards employment initiatives, poverty, entrepreneurship and many more schemes. Could we welcome businesses to appreciate our culture, values, and capital as a huge opportunity to continue building our culture capital in new ways?

I am aware this may be a romantic idea, but why not dream of a world where we could both recognise communities building culture while celebrating and asking the businesses who want to leverage it to contribute to the growth of the capital.

Brixton Village and Market Row are back on the market. Price lowered from £80M to a minimum bid of £ 50M. This week, The Advocacy Academy and the Brixton Traders and Community Association said they have until 22 June to explore whether a community-led bid is possible. Not a finished plan. A door, briefly open.

Ask most people why this is important, and you’ll hear answers like stopping a private equity firm coming in and putting the rents up”. That might be true, and it could well happen, but I think there’s a greater reason for the community to own this market: it isn’t about what we’re trying to prevent, it’s about what we’re trying to protect and build.

Granville Arcade — now Brixton Village — was granted listed status in 2010 for its historic interest. English Heritage calls it the clearest architectural mark of the Windrush generation, “the spiritual home of Caribbeans in Britain.” All true. But it misses something. This is the cultural capital of London. The Black capital. One of the most diverse corners of the city. Owning the market is a chance to shape that, to double down on it, and to make sure the value we create here stays here — in Brixton, in the hands of the people who build it daily.

And there’s something the heritage listing can’t capture: ownership changes how you build. When a place is truly yours, you treat it differently — with pride, with care, with the long view. That’s the real prize. Community ownership isn’t only a defence against the wrong buyer; it’s a chance to elevate Brixton further, to make the market better than it has ever been, because the people who love it most are finally the ones in charge.

Own it, and traders get the room to stay longer and build something that lasts — a market that works for the people running the stalls, not just the people collecting the rent.

I won’t pretend there’s no risk. A buyer who doesn’t care — who treats Brixton as something to extract from rather than invest in — is a real threat. And I’ve heard the other worry too, because I had it myself: can the people leading this actually pull it off? Speaking to traders and others, that doubt is real.

But here’s where I’ve landed. Right now, the only thing that matters is whether we acquire it. Execution will bring challenges — running a market is hard, and there will be plenty of issues to solve. That’s a problem for another day. First, you get the keys. You can’t fix what you don’t own.

This is the moment to dream — and then to do the work. Come Friday. Bring your people. Add your name. We may never get this chance again.

I’ve been walking in Brixton all week. I can feel it.

Last week's Bank Holiday brought tens of thousands to Brockwell for Cross the Tracks and City Splash. Afterparties spilt into Brixton. Energy I haven't seen in years.

Six months ago, talking to the operators of some of our largest venues, they were all struggling. Last weekend might have been the busiest weekend most of them had ever had. Pergola is trending on TikTok, and everyone— every Londoner under thirty seems to be looking for it. Pop Brixton’s queues were unheard of. Brixton Stories inside the Prince of Wales had a line that started at KFC and ran the length of Coldharbour to Electric Avenue.

This weekend, Mighty Hoopla lands at Brockwell Park. Lily Allen Saturday, Scissor Sisters Sunday. Another tens of thousands flooding into Brixton.

Has something fundamentally shifted, or is this just early-summer festival vibes inspired by incredible weather?

I think we are onto something new in Brixton. Four anchors—Pergola, Freight, POW, and Pop—bring in the crowds, and the overflow lights up everything in between.

The Green Party won 29 seats across Lambeth. Labour won 26 seats.
To put that into perspective, Labour previously held 54 seats, while the Greens only had 4.

That’s a huge political shift in one of London’s most culturally important boroughs.

What’s especially interesting is that this happened in places like Brixton, where political identity has felt relatively stable for a very long time.

So I’m genuinely curious: why do you think this happened?

The BCC list

Another chain. A high street that in five or ten years looks like everywhere else. That fear is real and it lives in a lot of us.

But here's the thing, PizzaExpress has actually done the work. They've put Brixton musicians Ruben Fox and Mark Kavuma on the walls. They partnered with Brixton Soup Kitchen to donate nearly 800 pizzas a year. They spoke to Stafford at Healthy Eaters and collaborated on a jerk pizza. That's not a brand parachuting in — that's a brand trying to earn its place.

I respect chains that come into a neighbourhood and look to assimilate, work with the culture, and create something unique to where they are. Big up to that. The question isn't whether chains arrive, they will. The question is whether Brixton demands they show up differently. This time they did.
