Jamaica’s Independence Day in Brixton 🇯🇲
Today marks 64 years since the black, green and gold first rose over an independent Jamaica — and few postcodes outside the island carry the day like Brixton.
Jamaica counts 14 parishes; Brixton has long answered to the title of the 15th. This is where the Windrush generation found work, built churches, opened shops, raised sound systems and helped make SW9 a capital of Caribbean Britain.
Today, Brixton Village and Market Row mark the day with two celebrations. From 1pm, Ms Esme’s Organic Roots hosts an afternoon of fresh juices, celebration cake, elders’ stories and lovers rock, dub and dancehall. Later, Etta’s Seafood takes over the evening with Levi Roots, Brixton Downbeat, Tiny T and Pure Vinyl on the decks, with some jerk chicken, jerk fish and more.
Start with a rum punch at Stafford’s rum bar inside Healthy Eaters, pass through Ms Esme’s in the afternoon, then finish the evening dark at Etta’s Seafood with an all star lineup.

📣 Brixton Community Cinema Announces Its Farewell Season
Four years, 70-plus screenings, 3,000 of us in the seats — and one last season. The volunteer-run, pay-what-you-can pop-up that built a cinema under the Atlantic Road arches and brought John Akomfrah to Brixton bows out with When the Stars Meet the Ocean: Cinema from the Shores of the Indian Ocean — Hussein Shariffe’s newly restored The Dislocation of Amber, Pratibha Parmar in person, and collaborations with the June Givanni Pan African Cinema Archive.
